How can I employ a new staff member, or change an existing staff member’s employment terms?
All vacancies and new positions, or changes to a current position at Shofar congregations, must be communicated by the senior pastor or Office Manager to Shofar Human Resources.
Please include motivation for the appointment, as well as details regarding the proposed working hours, main job description and proposed remuneration. If a specific person is suggested, please include their full name as well.
Shofar Human Resources will send an offer of employment to the Senior Pastor detailing the position, working hours, remuneration and the commencement date, for signing by the nominee. The signed Offer of Employment must be returned to Shofar Human Resources together with a completed Employee information form and a copy of their ID.
What is required for termination of employment?
A resignation letter is required from the employee, which also states the last day of employment. Please note the minimum notice periods, as contained in paragraph 3.14 of the employment manual. Send the resignation letter to HR@shofaronline.org.
Am I allowed to lend money to a staff member?
No staff loans may be made without the approval of the National Finance Administrator. A staff loan agreement must be signed by the staff member as well as the National Finance Administrator. In order to get approval, you can send an email to nfa@shofaronline.org.
Please note: All interest free staff loans in excess of R3000 constitutes a taxable fringe benefit.
Should I pay an honorarium to another Shofar pastor?
Honorariums to employed pastors are meant to cover travel costs plus something extra (for a meal etc). It is the regional leader’s responsibility to set a policy for honorariums to be paid to the pastors in his region. It is advised that no honorarium is paid between pastors in one region, or between pastors in close proximity who preach regularly at each other’s congregations.
What should my honorarium be for a visiting speaker (Non-Shofar Pastor)?
Use the table below as a guideline to determine a suitable amount:

| Cover travel costs and accommodation plus | R1000 per speaking opportunity | R2000 per speaking opportunity | R3000 per speaking opportunity/ sermon/ lecture |
